Self-improvement & Success: Hand in Hand

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Everything that happens to us happens in purpose. And sometimes, one thing leads to another. Instead of locking yourself up in your cage of fears and crying over past heartaches, embarrassment and failures, treat them as your teachers and they will become your tools in both self-improvement and success.

Remember watching Patch Adams? It’s one great film that will help you improve yourself. Hunter “patch” Adams is a medical student who failed to make it through the board exams. After months of suffering in melancholy, depression and suicidal attempts – he decided to seek for medical attention and voluntarily admitted himself in a psychiatric ward. His months of stay in the hospital led him to meeting different kinds of people.

Sick people in that matter. He met a catatonic, a mentally retarded, a schizophrenic and so on. Patch found ways of treating his own ailment and finally realized he has to get back on track. He woke up one morning realizing that after all the failure and pains he has gone through, he still want to become a doctor. He carries with himself a positive attitude that brought him self-improvement and success. He didn’t only improved himself, but also the life of the people around him and the quality of life. Did he succeed? Needless to say, he became the best damn doctor his country has ever known.

So, when does self-improvement become synonymous with success? Where do we start? Take these tips:

• Stop thinking and feeling as if you’re a failure, because you’re not. How can others accept you if YOU can’t accept YOU?

• When you see hunks and models on TV, think more on self-improvement, not self pitying. Self-acceptance is not just about having nice slender legs, or great abs. Concentrate on inner beauty.

• When people feel so down and low about themselves, help them move up. Don’t go down with them. They’ll pull you down further and both of you will end up feeling inferior.

• The world is a large room for lessons, not mistakes. Don’t feel stupid and doomed forever just because you failed on a science quiz. There’s always a next time. Make rooms for self-improvement.

• Take things one at a time. You don’t expect black sheep’s to be goody-two-shoes in just a snap of a finger. Self-improvement is a one day at a time process.

• Self-improvement results to inner stability, personality development and SUCCESS. It comes from self-confidence, self appreciation and self-esteem.

• Set meaningful and achievable goals. Self-improvement doesn’t turn you to be the exact replica of Cameron Diaz or Ralph Fiennes. It hopes and aims to result to an improved and better YOU.

• Little things mean BIG to other people. Sometimes, we don’t realize that the little things that we do like a pat on the back, saying “hi” or “hello”, greeting someone “good day” or telling Mr. Smith something like “hey, I love your tie!” are simple things that mean so much to other people. When we’re being appreciative about beautiful things around us and other people, we also become beautiful to them.

• When you’re willing to accept change and go through the process of self-improvement, it doesn’t mean that everyone else is. The world is a place where people of different values and attitude hang out. Sometimes, even if you think you and your best friend always like to do the same thing together at the same time, she would most likely decline an invitation for self-improvement.

We should always remember that there’s no such thing as ‘over night success’. Its always a wonderful feeling to hold on to the things that you already have now, realizing that those are just one of the things you once wished for. A very nice quote says that, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” We are all here to learn our lessons. Our parents, school teachers, friends, colleagues, officemates, neighbors… they are our teachers. When we open our doors for self-improvement, we increase our chances to head to the road of success.

New insurance mandates take effect in Wisconsin

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Young adults can stay on their parentsâ?? insurance longer, and birth control costs must be covered for those looking to avoid having any kids at all, under new laws that take effect Friday in Wisconsin. Also starting in the new year, state workers and employees at the University of Wisconsin can receive domestic partner health insurance and other benefits. The new mandate that insurance plans cover autism will take effect for most on Friday when group policies are renewed. That law change started in November, but most policy holders wonâ??t start paying for it until now.The new insurance mandates were approved by the Democratic-controlled Legislature and Gov. Jim Doyle this year. Advocates who pushed for requiring birth control and autism coverage argued it was over due, even though the new mandates are expected to increase costs for all policy holders.â??Itâ??s another year in the march toward increasing health insurance premiums,â? said J.P. Wieske, director of state affairs for the Council for Affordable Health Insurance, a national advocacy group whose membership includes insurers, health care providers, actuaries and insurance brokers. No one seems to know how much the changes will cost. Neither the state Office of the Insurance Commissioner nor the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans, which represents 18 member health plans across the state, has estimates.â??Every indication is that the mandates have increased costs and cost expectations will be higher for 2010,â? said Phil Dougherty, senior executive officer of the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans. The association didnâ??t oppose any of the changes but instead worked with the governor and state lawmakers on ensuring that the laws do what was intended, Dougherty said. There was opposition from anti-abortion and Catholic groups to requiring contraceptives to be covered under health insurance policies. Opponents argued that birth control is not medically necessary and insurance companies should not be forced to pay for what is a personal decision. The Wisconsin Catholic Conference is lobbying lawmakers to provide an exemption for religious organizations.â??The law does not give adequate deference to our religious values and our religious liberties,â? said John Huebscher, executive director of the conference. â??It would force dioceses and other Catholic organizations that buy insurance to pay for something they object to.â?Three of the stateâ??s five Catholic dioceses purchase private health insurance, which would be required to include contraceptive coverage, he said. However, their policies arenâ??t up for renewal until later in 2010, so the hope is the Legislature will provide for the exemption before then. Those three dioceses in Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay insure about 6,000 clergy, staff and other employees, Huebscher said. The other two in La Crosse and Superior are self-insured and not bound by the law, he said.Planned Parenthood opposes any exemptions because that will limit womenâ??s access to birth control, said the groupâ??s legal and policy analyst Nicole Safar.â??An exemption really defeats the purpose,â? she said.Mandating birth control coverage will dramatically increase its access, Safar said. She cited a 2001 report by the state Office of the Insurance Commissioner that showed about one in five of the most popular insurance plans with prescription drug coverage in Wisconsin did not cover contraceptives.Wisconsin is joining 24 other states that already require birth control to be covered, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Two additional states require insurance companies to offer contraceptive coverage as an option to employees, but it can be declined.Federal law requires insurance coverage of contraceptives for federal employees.Under another insurance change taking effect in Wisconsin, adults up to age 27 could remain on their parents health insurance plans unless they have access to cheaper plans through their employers.Current law does not address how long a child can remain on their parentâ??s coverage, leaving it up to individual insurers to decide.Supporters of increasing the age, including Doyle and the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans, said the law will help young people who either canâ??t afford health insurance when they first start working or arenâ??t offered it.There were no estimates from the state or the insurance industry as to how many people may be affected. To qualify, the young adults have to be single, not eligible for insurance through their employer, or be able to get on their parentsâ?? plan for less money than through their work.About 20 states require insurance companies to offer parents coverage of adult children, according to the Council for Affordable Health Insurance. The domestic partner benefits are being extended to unmarried partners of state employees who live together, share expenses and meet other requirements. It is open to unmarried couples of the opposite sex as well as same-sex couples. As of Tuesday, 710 people and 57 dependents have signed up for the health insurance, according to the Department of Employee Trust Funds. Another 300 state workers have signed affidavits saying that they qualify for the benefits, indicating that they may sign up later.Another 179 university employees added a domestic partner to their health insurance as of Dec. 21.The health insurance benefit is separate from other rights that all same-sex couples became eligible for in the state starting in August. Under that law, couples had to sign a registry in order to receive a host of rights already afforded married couples, including hospital visitation and inheritance.

Three Ways to Improve your Fitness Levels

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Many people want to improve their physical fitness levels. However, they often make the excuses that they don’t know how or they don’t have the time. In this article I outline three ways you can implement fitness training into your daily routine.

1) LIFESTYLE CHANGE:- One of the easiest ways to improve your current fitness levels is to make small, positive changes to your daily routine. Specifically, you need to improve your diet and your exercise routine. As I have mentioned, these changes do not have to be large. If you make small changes to your lifestyle at regular intervals these will soon build up to become large changes which yield significant results.

One way you could change your eating habits is by eating one less takeaway a week and substituting this for a healthier, home cooked meal. Then in the second week you could build on this by eating a salad for lunch once or twice a week. You can alter your exercise habits in a similar way. In the first week use stairs instead of elevators. In week two participate in a thirty minute brisk walk twice a week. As you can see these small but positive lifestyle changes collectively become significant changes which can lead to improved fitness levels.

2) FITNESS EQUIPMENT:- Another great way to improve your fitness levels is to take advantage of the large selection of fitness equipment on the market. When choosing fitness equipment you first have to decide what your fitness targets are. Do you want to improve your cardiovascular fitness? If so then a treadmill, rowing machine or exercise bike will be most suitable for you. Do you want to tone and strengthen your muscles? Then free weights and weight machines are what you should be using.

You also need to consider whether you want to purchase the fitness equipment for yourself or take advantage of the fitness equipment at the gym. Both have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Owning your own fitness equipment means that you can use it whenever you want, within the comfort of your own home. However, unless you have a lot of storage space and money you will be unable to purchase the range of equipment that a gym can provide. The gym can provide you with a large range of equipment for a relatively low cost. However, when the gym is full you will have to wait for machines and you will also have to spend time commuting to and from the gym.

Whatever you choose regarding your fitness equipment you must consider one important factor. Fitness equipment will assist you in your exercise but it will not do it for you. You still have to put in the time and effort that leads to improved fitness levels.

3) FITNESS TRAINER:- Taking advantage of a fitness trainer is a great way to improve your fitness levels. You can explain your fitness goals to the trainer and then they can show you the best way to achieve them. A fitness trainer should also help you stay motivated, show you where you are going wrong and lead you down the right path, making it more likely that you will achieve your targets.

When choosing a fitness trainer there are a number of factors you should consider. A good fitness trainer should be able to provide success stories from their past which prove their credentials. You should also look at their qualifications to measure how well trained they are. Finally, you should arrange a meeting with a number of fitness trainers and see which ones match your personality.

As you can see there are plenty of options available to you if you want to improve your fitness levels. Although I have given you the advice you have to take that first step and implement fitness training into your daily routine. Choose whichever ideas you think are best for you and get started. The sooner you begin to take action, the sooner you will start to see results.
